Sioux City Park – Wild West town

Sioux City mapSioux City Park is a remarkably detailed Wild West town in the south of Gran Canaria, just north of the resort of San Agustin. Here you can walk along dusty streets past the saloon, bank, sheriff’s office and all the other buildings you would expect to see in a Wild West town.

Every time we have visited Sioux City, we have been impressed by the attention to detail throughout the town and the amount of work that has gone into the different shows. It feels almost like stepping straight into one of the many classic cowboy films we watched on television over the years.

A complete Wild West town full of detail

What makes Sioux City special is that it is not just a handful of sets. Together, the buildings form a complete Wild West town built around a long main street. The sheriff’s office and jail stand close to the bank, with the saloon on the opposite side of the street. Further along are the hotel, church and, naturally, the undertaker’s.

Several of the buildings are open to visitors. Inside, the furnishings, signs and numerous props help complete the experience. The dry, rocky surroundings also fit the setting well and make it feel more like a film set than a conventional theme park.

That is no coincidence. Sioux City was built in 1972 as a set for the western film Take a Hard Ride, which premiered in 1975. Since then, the town has been used as a location for several films, television series and adverts.

Shows and life on the streets

The Wild West town is an attraction in its own right, but throughout the day actors, horses and other animals bring the streets to life. The programme may include bank robberies, gunfights, brawls, stunts and cattle drives through the town. There is also entertainment in the saloon.

The actors mingle with visitors and add to the distinctive atmosphere. You can often have your photo taken with the sheriff, a cowboy or one of the town’s other characters.

The show programme can vary between weekdays and weekends. It is therefore worth checking the day’s schedule on the official website before your visit and choosing the shows you most want to see. In our experience, 3–4 hours is about right if you want enough time to explore the Wild West town properly and watch a few of the shows.

Visiting Sioux City with children

Sioux City is particularly appealing to families with children who are fascinated by cowboys, horses and the Wild West. There is plenty for children to discover inside the buildings. They can peer into the jail and meet some of the town’s many characters.

The park also appeals to adults, especially those who grew up watching classic cowboy films. The shows include gunfire and other loud noises, which may be overwhelming for very young children or those who are sensitive to noise.

On the outskirts of the town, you can also see animals including horses and cattle that play an active role in the park’s shows.

Food, tickets and transport

Sioux City has a restaurant serving burgers, pizza and other simple dishes. On selected days, the restaurant also serves barbecue food. Opening times, ticket prices and show schedules can change, so always check the latest information on the park’s official website.

The park can be reached by car or taxi, and there is a car park by the entrance. Sioux City also runs a free shuttle bus from several resorts along Gran Canaria’s south coast. Check the routes and departure times before visiting.

If you want to stay fairly close to Sioux City, the 4-star Gloria Palace San Agustin is a good family-friendly option. The hotel has a large pool area and plenty of activities for both children and adults. Several of San Agustin’s beaches are also nearby.
