Puerto Rico beach
The holiday resort of Puerto Rico is located in the sunny south-western part of Gran Canaria. The distance to the international airport is 47 kilometres, with motorway almost all the way.

Playa de Puerto Rico in general
Playa de Puerto Rico is a lovely beach with golden sand imported from the Sahara Desert. The water is shallow and very well protected by the large breakwaters, which help keep the sea calm throughout most of the year.
The beach is almost 300 metres long and offers good facilities, including sun loungers, sunshades and showers. The public toilets are also better maintained than at many other beaches on Gran Canaria.
One of the things we like about Playa de Puerto Rico is that it combines good facilities with a relaxed atmosphere, but we also enjoy walking to the neighbouring beach Playa de Amadores from time to time. It’s a lovely 25-minute walk along the coast, and it’s one of Gran Canaria’s most beautiful beaches.
Child-friendliness
The water is shallow and waves are rare. Combined with the soft sand and plenty of space to play, this makes Playa de Puerto Rico one of the most child-friendly beaches on Gran Canaria.
Water sports
Puerto Rico is one of the best places on Gran Canaria for water sports. Near the small marina next to the beach, it is possible to try parasailing, banana boat rides, stand-up paddleboarding and jet skiing.
There is also an experienced diving centre near the harbour, offering diving trips and courses for both beginners and more experienced divers.
Beach restaurants
Along the wide seafront promenade behind the beach, you will find a good selection of restaurants, cafés and bars. There are also cafés at both ends of the beach, making it easy to buy drinks, snacks or lunch without having to walk far.
Puerto Rico as a holiday resort
Puerto Rico is the second-largest holiday resort on Gran Canaria and one of the sunniest places on the island. Originally a small fishing village, the area began to develop rapidly in the 1970s when visitors discovered its excellent climate and sheltered location.
Today, hotels, apartment complexes and holiday homes cover much of the valley and surrounding hillsides. Despite its size, Puerto Rico is easy to get around, and most facilities are within walking distance.
Puerto Rico has a wide range of restaurants to suit most budgets and tastes. Many are concentrated around three main areas: Puerto Rico Shopping Centre, Europa Centre and the seafront near the beach. Two of our favourites include the seafood restaurant El Puerto and the more informal Grill Costa Mar.
There are plenty of activities in Puerto Rico, so it is difficult to get bored. Popular excursions include boat trips along the coast, with regular services to Puerto de Mogán and Arguineguín. Fishing enthusiasts can also join deep-sea fishing trips in search of marlin, tuna and other large species.
Families with children are particularly well catered for. Angry Birds Activity Park is one of the most popular attractions in the resort, and in the centre of town you will also find a pleasant park with a playground, carousels and a fun mini-golf course.
Puerto Rico map
The beach can be seen in the centre of the map, and it is easy to see how well protected it is from the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The smaller marina is located next to the beach, while the larger marina lies southeast of it. This is also where you will find the 4-star Marina Suites, our favourite hotel in Puerto Rico.
