Playa del Cura

Playa del Cura mapPlaya del Cura is a small, quiet holiday resort on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria, just beyond Amadores and a few kilometres from Puerto Rico. Hotels and holiday apartments overlook the dark-sand beach, with a small shopping centre at the heart of the resort.

It’s a place for swimming, leisurely meals and time to unwind. Neighbouring Playa de Tauro adds another beach to explore, while the busier resorts along the coast are within easy reach.

The beach at Playa del Cura

The beach lies directly in front of the hotels, with dark sand and patches of pebbles and stones. At the eastern end, the sand is finer and you can hire sunbeds and parasols. The western part is coarser and stonier, particularly near the water.

There are foot showers for rinsing the sand off your feet. Water shoes can be useful on the stonier stretches, although there are sandy areas where it is easier to get into the sea. It is a straightforward spot for sunbathing and swimming, with the hotels close behind.

Neighbouring Playa de Tauro is well worth a visit. We love its beautiful sandy beach and very relaxed atmosphere, and many local residents come here to enjoy the beach too. It makes a lovely alternative when you fancy a change of scene without going far from Playa del Cura.

Child-friendliness

Children can play on the sandy parts of the beach, though some stretches are stony at the water’s edge. The sea is often calm, but waves can build when the wind comes from the south or south-west. Choose where to swim according to the conditions that day.

Water sports

Playa del Cura is mainly a place for swimming and relaxing. For a wider choice of organised water sports, head to nearby Puerto Rico, where you can arrange activities such as jet skiing and parasailing.

Restaurants near the beach

For a meal right by the sand, we recommend Kala Beach. In our view, the food is a step above what you would usually expect from a beach restaurant. Its beachfront setting makes it a lovely place for a leisurely lunch, and there is also a cocktail menu if you fancy a drink overlooking the sea.

Playa del Cura as a holiday resort

Playa del Cura is a compact holiday resort, with a small shopping centre containing a sizeable supermarket and a handful of family-friendly restaurants. Some hotels sit right beside the beach, while others are built into the hillside, so you may have an uphill walk back to your accommodation.

For couples, we particularly recommend Restaurante Delicias, beside the shopping centre. We have enjoyed lovely meals here, and the stylish interior and views make it an appealing choice for an evening out.

A little outside the resort, Restaurante Guantánamo has been one of our favourite restaurants on Gran Canaria for decades. Founded in 1982, this family restaurant serves Canarian, Spanish and international dishes. Its long history is part of what we love about it. Despite the many positive reviews, it still feels like something of a local secret.

If you are looking for a comfortable hotel by the beach, H10 Costa Mogán offers four-star, adults-only accommodation with an all-inclusive option. There is a gym, and activities include yoga and water aerobics.

For a change of pace, visit Puerto Rico or explore the harbour and streets of picturesque Puerto de Mogán. Further afield, spend a day exploring the gardens and seeing the birds and other animals at Palmitos Park.

The roundabout marks the small resort centre, with the shopping centre, bus stop and road leading down to the beachfront hotels. Playa de Tauro lies just to the south-east, in the neighbouring bay. Playa de Amadores is a little further along the coast.
